Hi! My name is Jane Wiercioch and I am a co-advisor for the Department of Agronomy (AGRY) and the Natural Resources and Environmental Science Interdisciplinary Program (NRES) Ambassadors. Besides working with the ambassadors, I also meet with prospective students, help advise current students, serve as a department representative on some of the College of Agriculture's committees, along with other responsibilities.
We're excited for this new school year! The Agronomy Department's current undergraduate enrollment is around 170 students. Over 50 of the 170 are new students coming in as either freshmen or transfer students. The NRES program has 88 students with around 15 being new students.
One of the goals of our AGRY/NRES Ambassador blog is for prospective and current students to get a look into the lives of students enrolled in an Agronomy or NRES major. Reading about the activities (clubs and teams) and experiences (study abroad, research, jobs, and internships) our ambassadors are involved in is a great way to learn about the many opportunities available to students! There's nothing like getting an up front and personal view from our ambassadors who are blogging their experiences!.

Hey Everyone,
My name is Ben Wiatt
and I am a junior at Purdue University majoring in Agronomic: Business and
Marketing. I am from a small town called Russellville, IN which is just about
an hour South and a little West of here. When at home I usually spend my time
doing odd jobs and volunteering for the Russellville community center. One of
those job this year included refinishing the gym floor.--->
This past summer I worked for
Co-Alliance as an intern for region one which consists of five branch
locations. During this internship I managed 5 scouts, but was also involved
with many other aspects of the business including scouting, delivering seed,
delivering anhydrous, soil sampling, tissue sampling, going on sales calls, and
working in the shop. Also during my internship, I was able to go on tours of
other co-alliance locations all over the state that included, grain, swine, bulk fertilizer, and agronomy

Back to school!
Hey! My name is Julia Fibbe and I am currently a sophomore attending Purdue University studying Agronomy with the concentration of Crop and Soil Management. I am from a small town in Massachusetts called Hamilton which is about forty-five minutes north of Boston on the coast. This past summer I worked as an assistant grower on a farm in my hometown where we grew 20 different crops and distributed them through farmers markets, CSA’s and local restaurant orders. When I wasn’t farming I spent most of my time at the beach or at a lake with my family. I hope everyone had a great summer and are ready to get back to school. Wow, senior year is here already!!
Hello,
My name is Jurgin Cripe. I'm a senior here at Purdue University studying agronomy with a concentration in business and marketing. I'm from North Manchester, IN which is in the Northeastern part of the state. We have a row crop, hay, and cow calf operation which takes up much of my free time especially on weekends and harvest time. Ever since I was a little kid I knew I either wanted to farm or do something in the agricultural field so I decided what better way to pursue that dream than to attend one of the best agricultural schools in the nation. So here I am, senior year and beginning the application process for a potential dream job.
This past summer I had the opportunity to intern with Crop Production Services, thanks to Purdue's agricultural career fair they host every semester. While I was with CPS this summer I was able to work hands on with all aspects of their business. CPS is the countries leading provider of agricultural inputs. They provide farmers many ag services, and agricultural products such as fertilizer, chemical, and seed. My activities this summer included scouting fields, working with farmers, delivering different products to farmers, and other various operations around the plant. I also had the opportunity to travel around to a different CPS
plants once every week all across the state with other CPS interns who
predominantly attended Purdue as well. This internship provided for me
sales experience, many networking opportunities, and agronomic training
which will benefit me throughout my career.

Back at Purdue after a great summer at Cornell!
Welcome back, Boilers! It feels good to be back after almost 9 months of being away from studying abroad at University College Dublin to completing my summer internship. I just wanted to share a little bit about my summer--what a fun experience!
This summer I participated in a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergradutes (NSF REU) at the Boyce Thompson Institue at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Myself and 20 other undergradutes from around the country worked in various labs on projects related to plant genomics in various systems. and I worked in Dr. Mike Scanlon's lab investigating the establishment of leaf polarity in tomato, specifically using a in situ hybridization. I definitely learned a lot of lab technqiues, as well as how to ask good questions and think critically in a research environment.
The world of Purdue Agronomy is a small one... Former Agronomy Ambassador and Purdue alumnus Daniel Sweeney is now a graduate student in Plant Breeding & Genetics doing his PhD work in small grains breeding. Funny enough, he gave me a tour when I was in high school thinking about attending Purdue! He showed me some of the wheat and barley projects in the department. Wherever you go, you're never too far from a Boilermaker!

I also got to explore the lovely city of Ithaca, with its lakes and gorges and hiking! A lot of us got to travel to Niagara Falls and New York City, as well. Overall, it was a great opportunity offered through NSF, and I highly recommend any current or future students who are interested in research to look into summer REU program offered through the NSF.

Summertime!!
Hello, my name is Abigail Clark and this is my last year here at Purdue. I am from Frankfort, IN so Purdue isn't too far from home. I am one of four children from my lovely parents and we all will be Purdue Alums by this time next year! This coming spring I will be graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Agronomy with a concentration in crop and soil management. My past two summers I have had an internship with Windy Lane Farms as their New Technology Intern. Through that experience I have worked with UAVs, 360 Yield Soil Scan, Y-drops, farming software, and crop diagnostics programs. The internship allowed me take classroom material and apply it to the real world. This summer I was able to train a new employee on a few pieces of technology and equipment. Along with that I have been working part time for Halderman Farm Management. In just a short week I will be off to Ireland with a study abroad group from Purdue where we will be learning about the Equine Industry. I am very excited to travel with Purdue to expand my knowledge on the equine industry abroad. In my spare time this summer I have enjoyed camping with my family, fishing, and spending time with my 6 month old niece. I look forward to this coming semester at Purdue. Boiler Up!

Hello, My Calvin Knotts. I am a Senior in the Agronomy Department majoring in Crop and Soil management. I have spent the past 4 summer working with my best friend raising processing tomatoes for Red Gold Inc.We now have our 2016 crop transplanted and are working to fertilize and protect them from disease.
I have had the great opportunity today to meet 4 incoming members to our agronomy department. These individuals are participating in the Pathway To Purdue Program and have the intentions of acquiring their bachelors in Agronomy. As a transfer Student from Ivy Tech I could relate well to the group and I encouraged them to set big goals for their future and keep pushing towards them. It's been a great summer so far and I look forward to seeing everyone in the fall and meeting the new members of the agronomy department.
